1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wacky adventures that are not afraid to tackle serious issues By Joanna L. B. Chaplin Steampunk is not usually my favorite setting. I tend to find that it celebrates the visual aspects of Victorian society and the coolness factor of the industrial revolution while completely ignoring many problematic aspects of the actual historical period it draws inspiration from. However, Knighton works hard to make sure to be serious about things that really should be taken seriously, even as he writes wacky, sometimes silly, adventure stories. This is the first novel featuring Dirk Dynamo and Timothy Blaze-Simms of the Epiphany Club, who have shown up in his short stories before (see Riding the Mainspring: A Collection of Steampunk Short Stories).In all fairness, Andrew Knighton is an internet friend of mine, and I beta-read this book for him a little while ago. It was the first novel I've beta-read, and it was neat to see the various aspects that were unclear all polished up nicely. Even though he's a friend, I really do think that Knighton has some good, solid, socially-conscious fiction to contribute to the steampunk genre.

By Steve H A steampunk effort that leaves you wanting more.Join Dirk, Isabelle, and Sir Timothy as they embark on high adventure in the pursuit of treasure lost to the antiquities. This unlikely trio of personalities must learn where to leverage their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses as they travel to exotic locales if they are to achieve the goals they set forth back in England. And along the way danger and death come at them from both likely and unlikely sources. Add a dash of some unexpected politics and you too will be wanting more.I too must confess that I was a beta reader for the author and not much of a fan of steampunk based upon previous exposure(very limited). But to my eye this serialized pulp could easily be set in other genre's and that is indicative of the strength of Andrew's writing. Don't get me wrong, the genre is very much alive with gadgets aplenty. Where this excels is characters that are believable, narrative that seeps in and worldbuilding that is both plausible and researched. I found myself wanting to know more about the protagonist and where these heroes adventure next. I am sure this will be covered in later installments.If you want something that harkens back to the glory days of pulp, do yourself a favor and get in on this serial now.

I had read the ebook several months ago then did a skim read to better evaluate it. Story line flows. I agree with the moral values the writer has but they are obvious and perhaps could be delivered at bit more softly. In addition, from a warriors point of view, I don't agre with letting an advesary who is bent on my death contine to live to come to kill me in the next book....I know that is a continuity thing but putting him in a row boat to come after me later is a bit much in my opinion.
