Raferty Hawkins has few rules, but those rules he has, he insists upon. The Goldenes Tor and their temporary Orion Confederation allies violated the rules by attacking a pirate settlement and killing a couple of hundred women and children. A few of the offending ships were destroyed in subsequent battles but that hardly balances the ledger. An example must be made and Hawkins and the ships of Pirate Flotilla One are just the group to do that. Hawkins settles on an audacious plan to punish the Goths and OrCons while making a large profit in the process. He just needs a little help from his new best friends, the Aurora Empire. Help in the form of money, munitions, and one young Royal Navy officer with a talent for engine harmonics. Getting that support will set the plan in motion. A risky demonstration for the Zeke Home Fleet proves the plan can be done. Once he has the backing of his Zeke supporters, the strategy is put in motion. The operation will not be complete until a Goth squadron is destroyed, the most important Goth base in the quadrant is hammered, and a secret Orion installation finds out the hard way that it is not nearly as hidden as the OrCons believe. There is one powerful man who sees a different opportunity within the plan. The opportunity to train a Royal Navy officer in pirate operations so that officer can lead Aurora Empire forces back to the Badlands after the war is concluded. Good idea, but he chooses the wrong officer for the assignment. He also chooses the wrong people to attempt to fool. Hawkins, Tactical, Baby Doll, O’Hare, Legrand, and Delacruz are back and bent on revenge. Despite the vast distances, great risks, and potentially high costs, the plan must be carried out because, after all, payback is a given!

By Peter Seamless continuation from the first book. This is a continuation from Mr. Benjamin’s first novel, Allies of Convenience. Rafe Hawkins and his crew continue their vendetta against the perpetrators of a strike against their home base, namely the Goldenes Tor and the Orion Confederation. He puts a plan in motion for a strike deep in enemy territory which could have very large implications in the current war between the Aurora Empire and the Confederation, the two heavyweight powers in the story. How he does and how it pans out makes for a very fast paced, entertaining book. Not everything goes to plan for any of the protagonists but that is one of the features that makes the book so interesting. We learn a little more about the main characters and the author skillfully weaves a few hints and foreshadowings about the future within the narrative. While the book could be read as a stand-alone novel, there is also a clear arc running through both books so far which indicates that Hawkins has big plans for the future; especially bearing in mind what could happen if the two large empires made peace.Historical parallels abound: empires with slave dependent economies; two military superpowers, one of which is dangerously complacent; a surprise attack which is almost but not quite a knockout blow; a strong queen; there are many more but they are too numerous to list here. Suffice it to say that the author knows his history. There are definitely indications that our pirate captain has several more schemes in motion already, especially since he is very aware that all actions have consequences.Very much looking forward to the next book.

Heikes I went straight from reading book 1 right into this book -- luckily for me, the series flows just a quickly as I read!Picking up where Allies of Convenience left off, Payback starts to tie off those obvious loose ends that screamed sequel from the last book. The Zeke's are on the defensive, and they need someone or something to take the initiative away from OrCons and give them a respite before their empire collapses. Who should appear (nope, not a miniature sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer) but a pirate bearing presents... of the kind that go boom in the dark of space. With some daring and some cunning and some good luck, Hawkins and his motley crew strike off on a daring raid to even the odds just a little (and to get some payback while they are at it). This book does a good job of further developing the characters for Pirate Flot One that were introduced in the first book - delving more into their motivations and personalities while expanding on pirate culture in the Badlands. A more complete, and complex, picture emerges, making the ultimate conclusion of the novel all the more satisfying.I'll be waiting for the 3rd book in the series!

The "Badlands" lie between the empires, controlled by neither--the traditional hunting grounds of pirates. But these pirates are organized into loose formations, with little hierarchy, other than the respect accorded to those who are the most talented leaders. In the first volume, one faction had destroyed the "home base" of a pirate ship....an unforgivable offense which must be avenged. This aligns the Pirates with what the series paints as the "good guys (although whether there is actually any difference between the empires is unclear. As this volume opens, the Pirates make a sneak attack on the good guys' headquarters....or do they? As in the first volume, the pirate captain is the real hero of the book., as we follow his raids, triumphs, and near disasters.Good book for anyone who likes what has become known as "space operas." However, also interesting as the author makes an anarchist society appear far more functional than traditional bureaucratic dependent democracies.
