Robinson A whale of a fishing story about an old man who catches the fish he set out to but has a change of heart and attitude. A great short story for the men in your life who enjoy reading fishing tales. The author provides vivid description and an unseasoned fisherman can learn from his descriptions. I can visualize the man on the bridge with the young boy beside him on an upside down bucket for a seat. Visual images and you can taste and smell the salt air as you envision the turquoise waters of the keys. A short, quick read great for killing time during an appointment or flight. The old man learns that catching the biggest fish isn't really what's so important, after all.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great Short Read! By JLC13 I thoroughly enjoyed Tom Winton’s Just East of Key West. While I am not a fisherperson, I learned a great deal not only about life but about how to land a big fish. Winton seamlessly weaves reminiscence and nostalgia with solid technical know-how. He shows the conflict between age and youth with humor and without coming across as a curmudgeon. I read this story aloud to my husband, and he could totally relate to the questions Winton poses in this wonderful philosophical metaphor. A great short read that I highly recommend.

It starts out slow, but the description is so beautifully written, I swear I can see the man. I know him, I can smell what he smells. Then the pace picks up and the story becomes very exciting and sucks me in. I'm rooting for Frank to catch a couple of fish. I won't ruin the story, but it's full of surprises from that point on. It's short, but so sweet, so well written. Literature at its finest. Don't miss this short treat.
